THE ROLE OF MEASURING APPARATUS IN THE FOUNDATIONS OF LARGE STRUCTURES

LE ROLE DES INSTRUMENTS DE MESURE DANS LES FONDATIONS DES GRANDS OUVRAGES

Measuring apparatus usually employed to control the behaviour of structures in service are installed increasingly often at the time of construction so as to monitor the project under real conditions. This method ensures increased safety and overall economy. The author shows that to fulfil their role completely the apparatus must: (1) measure significant values; (2) be accurate, reliable and strong; (3) cause only minimum hindrance on sites. Details are given of some apparatus fulfilling these conditions: extensometer and drilling inclinometer, invar wire, pressure cell and drilling piezometer. Their use at construction stage is illustrated by real cases: dam foundations, tunnels, landslides, stabilization of excavation pits. Costs of the non-destructive testing operations are quoted.
