ASPECTS OF THE INTERIOR SAFETY OF LORRIES

ASPEKTE DER INEREN SICHERHEIT BEI LKW

Although the mass and shape of lorries is aggressive compared with other road users, there has been little emphasis on occupant protection in this type of vehicle. The report deals with the reasons for the lack of occupant protection measures; these are the low number of occupants killed and injured and the costs/benefits of occupant protection. Structural and physical methods of improving occupant protection in lorries are outlined, with particular emphasis on the exposed position of the driver's cab, space for survival, restraint system and interior design. A survey is made of existing legal occupant protection requirements and test procedures, and those still being developed. Finally it is stated that in most lorry accidents there is sufficient space for survival, so that if interior design, and particularly restraint systems, are improved, a considerable decrease can be expected in the numbers of lorry occupants injured and killed. The covering abstract for the conference is IRRD no 311484. (TRRL)
