THE A36 MOTORWAY: EXPERIMENTAL THICK CONCRETE SLAB

AUTOROUTE A 36; LA DALLE EPAISSE EXPERIMENTALE EN BETON HYDRAULIQUE

The Sechin-Montbeliard section was used as an experiment for the casting of a thick concrete slab resting on a drainage layer, with a moulded longitudinal joint. The aim was to test a structure providing for sufficiently effective drainage to prevent water pressure being built. The section is divided into 3 zones: zone (1) with a crushed limestone improved subgrade, 0,25 M thick lean concrete sub-base, gravel-bitumen wearing course; zone (2) with a crushed limestone improved subgrade, a gravel-limestone levelling drainage layer, concrete wearing course of a thickness varying between 0,25 and 0,40 M; zone (3) with a transverse profile identical to that of zone 1. The first observations made a few days after laying were encouraging as regards the laying of the drainage layers, the operation of the mixing plant, the laying of the slab, and the quality of concrete. Observations will continue during ageing of the slab on the time-related evolution of the mechanical strength of the slab. (TRRL)
