THE REUSE OF SALVAGED ASPHALTIC MATERIALS

WIEDERVERWENDUNG VON AUSGEBAUTEM ASPHALTMATERIAL

Recycling methods can be classified as repaving and reforming, cutting out accompanied by heating and immediate relaying on roads of minor importance; and removal, intermediate storage and transport to mixing plants for use in new paving materials. The article deals with the latter method. A direct supply to the mixing plant of the recycled material is seldom possible, because the material must be analysed in order to formulate the new mixture. The appropriate precautions are taken during intermediate storage to prevent the material sticking together and clumping. Due to the presence of recycled material a longer mixing time is necessary. This can be achieved by the provision of a second heated mixer. As an example the construction of a bituminous bearing coat 0/22 mm from fresh materials and 20% of recycled material obtained from A 0/8 mm rolled asphalt pavement. The new mixture completely met all the requirements of the technical regulations and could be layed in a similar manner to a normal mix. (TRRL)
