INTEGRATED TUG-BARGE VERSUS SHIP--AN ECONOMIC COMPARISON FOR THE GREAT LAKES

The paper discusses and compares the integrated tug-barge concept with a conventional ship of comparable size for bulk cargo service on the Great Lakes. Both have the maximum permissible dimensions. The vessels used as a base for comparison are the M.V. STEWART J. CORT (Ship) and the M.V. PRESQUE ISLE (ITB). Included in the rationale are differences in building cost, operating cost, annual transport capacity, revenues and required freight rates. A computer program was utilized and runs were made varying crew size, insurance cost to determine the sensitivity of measures of merit to changes in these items. Also analyzed is the effect of extended season operation and its probable impact on both the integrated tug-barge and ship.
