The total number of bridges in the United States on all types of highways combined has been estimated from 450,000 to 565,000. The number of bridges classified as "structurally deficient," or "functionally obsolete" also varies, ranging from a fairly recent Federal Highway Administration figure of 88,000 to other estimates reaching more than 100,000. This article presents a table reporting bridges in the various classifications by states as of December 1979 which is based on figures gathered by the magazine staff. emphasised.
