CHANGING PATTERNS IN THE WORLD MARKET FOR IRON ORE

Two recent innovations within the transportation industry have a direct application to the transportation of iron ore. These two innovations are the development of the unitrain within the railroad industry, and the creation of an economic environment encouraging the design and operation of bulk carriers within the maritime industry. An intelligent application of both innovations should significantly reduce the total physical distribution cost of transporting iron ore. Cost relationships between sources of raw material supply will be changed. In the long run adjustments in both the source of raw materials and in the geographical location of iron and steel mills will occur. Under the impact of changing physical distribution costs the structure of the whole iron and steel industry could be radically altered.
