REPORT ON SHIP MOTION SIMULATOR FACILITY

This new device that consists of a rotating arm to which a rope or cable is attached, simulates the sinusoidal motion of a ship. With the device, Battelle researchers will be able to determine the effects that ship motion has on such lifting machinery as constant-tension winches, ram tensioners, boom bobbers, and other motion compensation equipment. It will be particularly useful in developing new shipboard lift systems and in full-scale dynamic evaluations of these systems. Battelle's Ship Motion Simulator Facility is currently constructed to simulate up to sea state three (3) conditions with vertical ship motions of 2, 3 and 4 feet at frequency ranges of 5, 6, 7, 8 or 60 seconds per cycle. The equipment is capable of sustaining up to 30,000 lbs loading through these ranges. In addition to the capability of this device to act as the load on a ship's lifting system, as previously described, it is also capable of acting as the lifting system of a rolling ship enabling researchers to study the effects of this loading on a supported payload. In the latter mode, Battelle has the capability of studying these sea state conditions as applied to the water/payload interface utilizing the simulator facilities and Battelle's one atmosphere research pool.
