APPLICATIONS OF DIGITAL SIMULATION ANALYSIS TO SHIP CONTROL - DYNAMIC POSITIONING CONTROL OF DRILLING SHIPS
The dynamic positioning performance of a typical drilling ship design is evaluated in a computer-aided analysis to provide guidelines for operating limits in seaways. The necessary hydrodynamic and aerodynamic data are evaluated for this ship on the basis of available test results together with analytical computations. Equilibrium conditions and dynamic performance are examined in a series of digital computations under the influence of wind and water current with changes in wind conditions. Results reveal that the wind from the quartering direction has the greatest influence when the ship is directed towards the current. Summary charts are presented to indicate critical wind conditions.
