TRANSFER OF TRAINING FROM LOW TO HIGH FIDELITY BRIDGE SIMULATION

An investigation of simulator fidelity on training effectiveness was conducted at the Maritime Administration's Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF) at Kings Point, New York. Two groups of Chief Mates were trained on a simulated New York Harbor transit under a variety of conditions. One group was trained on the full CAORF bridge (high fidelity simulation) and the other was trained on a reduced bridge (low fidelity simulation). In addition, the reduced bridge group received limited supplemented training on the full bridge after completing their reduced bridge training. The primary difference between both bridges was the manner in which visual information was presented: on the full bridge a full-scale, detailed representation was presented in color and virtual size; on the reduced bridge the representation was in black and white, on standard 21-inch television monitors. The results showed equivalent improvement for both groups, but a decrement in performance by the reduced bridge group following the additional training on the full bridge. It was hypothesized that the two groups of subjects could have learned essentially different tasks or strategies. The full bridge group learned tasks and strategies using predominantly visual information as displayed outside of the wheelhouse on the large screens, while the reduced bridge group used predominantly radar. It was concluded that in any transfer-of-training program careful attention must be paid to the nature of the task as well as to the cognitive strategies developed and subsequently employed by the trainees.
