The volume is divided into subject sections, each of which is preceded by a brief summary giving any explanation of terms used, major sources, and origin of data used. Most of the tables are on an annual basis with data for preceding years included for historical comparisons. Supplementing the tables are charts which illustrate the more important economic and social trends. New tables are included in each volume as needed, thus keeping abreast of the times by providing data on new developments and interests. Cross-references are given to series in historical statistics of the United States. Detailed subject index. This contains 2 chapters devoted specifically to transportation: section 21. Transportation--land, and Section 22. Transportation--air and water. Section 21 gives the most extensive treatment to highway based transportation, covering mileage, financing, federal aid, gasoline taxes, motor vehicle production and registration, imports, operating costs, fuel consumption, insurance, accidents, employment and revenues. Most of this broken down by states. A one page summary of the transit industry is provided. Although there is more information on railroads, there is little on rail commutation. Other sections of the SA provide information on the Department of Transportation, aspects of the transportation industry not covered above, transportation equipment, and travel, as well as basic socio-economic population data. Appendix 2 provides a guide to statistical sources, including transportation. This appendix also contains a brief reference list of other census publications.
