E-Commerce Impacts on the Trucking Industry
This report examines e-commerce trends and the impact of e-commerce on the U.S. trucking industry. It begins with a look at trends in e-commerce sales, retail supply chains, and omni-channel retailing. Next, it discusses the impact of e-commerce on trucking operations including changes in trip length, delivery windows, and equipment. Finally, the top 10 issues as identified in American Transportation Research Institute's (ATRI's) 2018 industry issues survey are examined for e-commerce implications. Issues include: truck driver shortages, hours-of-service regulations, driver retention, the Electronic Logging Device Mandate, truck parking, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) program, and distracted driving.
