CONTROL OF OIL POLLUTION FOR OFFSHORE PLATFORMS AND LAND TERMINALS

In considering the economic advantages of preventing oil discharges and spillages, an industrial application is examined. Legislation regulating the dischrge of industrial effluents into rivers in England and Wales include the Rivers (Prevention of Pollution) Acts 1951 or 1961 and the Clean River Act 1960, while requirements for drilling rigs and other platforms were outlined at the International Conference on marine Pollution 1973. The regulations require that rigs and platforms be equipped with separating equipment or filtering systems and an oil content monitor ensuring a maximum oil content of 15 ppm. Design requirements for the oil content monitors and measurement techniques are discussed.
