RESEARCH AT THE TRANSPORT AND ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY TO DEVELOP DESIGN CRITERIA FOR REINFORCED EARTH

This paper describes research carried out at the laboratory to provide information for design purposes on: limit equilibrium analysis, tension in reinforcing elements, vertical pressures beneath the structure, pressures acting on the facing, spacing of the reinforcements, concentrated loads, soil type, and reinforcing elements. Some of the results obtained to date are given. In addition to outlining theoretical developments and describing possible mechanisms, data are presented from a series of experimental structures ranging from small-scale static and centrifuge model tests to full-scale experiments.
