CO₂ Emission Standards for Passenger Cars and Light-Commercial Vehicles in the European Union

The European Commission, the European Parliament, and the European Council agreed in December 2018 on an adjustment to the European Union (EU) regulation on carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions for new automobiles and vans. For automobiles, the goal is now a 15% reduction of CO₂ emissions by 2025, with a 37.5% reduction by 2030. For vans, a 15% reduction by 2025 and a 31% reduction by 2030 were agreed. Formal adoption by the Parliament and the Council is expected in January 2019. The adoption is seen as a formality, with no more changes or delays expected. A complementary regulation setting CO₂ standards for heavy-duty vehicles is being discussed, with a decision expected by end of the first quarter of 2019.
