RESEARCH ON ENERGY EXCHANGE IN NONUNIFORM FLOW FIELDS

The research involved three separate investigations, all related to flow processes and energy exchange in suspensions of particles in fluids. The first investigation, concerned with a particle suspension in shear flow, is a longer-termed investigation and is being continued under separate funding. The result of preliminary experiments and a description of the experimental equipment for further work is given in Section I. The second investigation, on drag of spheres in an oscillating liquid, which has been under way for several years, was completed during this contract period. The importance of the Strouhal frequency, or vortex shedding frequency, in correlating drag measurements is demonstrated. The third investigation, analytical in nature, was undertaken to clarify the results of earlier experiments on the collision process in fluids. The results of the investigation are given.
