AERODYNAMICS IN VEHICLE DESIGN

Aerodynamic aspect of modern vehicle design has shown remarkable progress due to its contribution to performance, fuel economy and aesthetics. This tendency continues to place aerodynamics as an important means of achieving better fuel economy and more comfortable driving. This presentation deals with those contributions and the impact on vehicle design in view of current situations which support aerodynamics as a major design technology. First part of the presentation provides theoretical background of aerodynamic contribution to vehicle performance and fuel economy, later followed by vehicle morphology indicating the close relation between configurations and aerodynamics in conjunction with their functional requirement. After that, some details of achieving aerodynamic targets are presented in the area of drag, lift, wind noise and wiper behaviour (a). (TRRL)
