Work Zone Crash Performance Data Measurement

The objective of this research was to utilize historical and archived crash data, maintained by Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), to closely analyze crash patterns in work zones, while considering crash, roadway geometry, environmental and several other characteristics and develop performance metrics for the work zones in Tennessee. The factors have important implications for education and training, traffic regulation and control, as well as planning and design of work zones safety measures. Identifying those factors and measures will ease the process of setting goals and actionable targets for the TDOT operations staff and manage their performance reporting process. This research determines, in close collaboration with TDOT, the appropriate set of measures for monitoring and evaluating Tennessee work zones performance in terms of safety, as well as for (monitoring and evaluating) the implemented strategies and the agency staff efficiency and awareness on safety issues.
