Calculation of the Lateral Forces Caused by B777 Turning during Taxiing
The introduction of a new generation of large aircraft (NGLA) as B777s, which have six-wheel configurations, has introduced more complicated landing gear and heavier axle loads. The wheel configurations and loads induce a complex mechanical response in pavement structure, particularly during tuning. The objective of this study was to determine the lateral force on all wheels during aircraft turning to permit future field measurements and pavement design. This paper documents the use of the velocity instantaneous method to analyze the lateral forces imparted by a B777. A single multiwheel landing gear was represented by a single wheel, and the total lateral force of each landing gear at different velocities was analyzed. The total lateral force of a multiwheel gear was assigned to each wheel. The results showed that both taxiing velocity and nose wheel steering angle had an effect on the lateral force during turning at low speeds. An increase in velocity and nose gear steering angle caused a significant increase in the lateral force. The maximum lateral force of the B777 was located on the main landing gear near the inside of the turning center or nose gear. These positions are recommended as the critical design factor.
