Les inconvénients pour la sécurité routière de certains comportements de conduite courtois

Drawbacks of some forms of courteous behaviour in terms of road safety. Road courtesy is generally considered as beneficial for road safety. Thus, in many countries, media campaigns aim to promote courteous behaviour among road users. However, no scientific study has dealt with the influence of courteous behaviour on the occurrence of accidents, as far as we know. The existing studies mainly focus on the association between aggressive or angry behaviour (road rage) and road safety. The objective of the present study is to determine whether some forms of courteous behaviour play a significant part in the processes of certain traffic accidents. The investigation was carried out on 2456 police reports on injury accidents occurred during one year in a large city of the south of France. The investigation shows that, in nearly 8 % of all traffic injury accidents reported by the police, a form of courteous road behaviour plays a role in the process leading to the collision. One of the most frequent situations involves a driver on a main road, stuck in a traffic jam, who gives way to another road user (motorist, pedestrian...) waiting to cross the traffic lane. This other road user pulls out onto the main road confidently and hastily, and collides with a road user hidden by the vehicle of the driver who gives way. We carried out an in-depth analysis of all these crashes and classified them into prototypical accident scenarios. Finally, some countermeasures are proposed, notably in terms of planning and design of urban roads.
