Microstructural Analysis for Forensic Control of Asphalt Mixtures Containing Recycled Asphalt Materials

During the past decades, many transportation agencies have evaluated the effect of adding Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), and, more recently, Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) on the performance of asphalt pavement, while limits were proposed on the amount of recycled materials which can be used. In this paper, the effect of adding RAP and RAS on the microstructural properties of asphalt mixtures is investigated using digital image processing (DIP) of digitalized images obtained by scanning Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) specimens made of asphalt mixture. Detailed information on the internal microstructure is acquired based on three-phase material analysis: aggregate, asphalt mastic and air voids. The numerical estimations of the spatial correlation functions and of the corresponding autocorrelation length (ACL) are then performed. It is found that the correlation function is affected by the presence of the recycled materials; in addition, it was observed that RAP increases the ACL of the spatial distribution of the material phases, while an opposite trend is observed for RAS. The proposed DIP analysis method has the potential of being used as a forensic quality control tool to verify that the mixing process doesn’t affect the microstructural distribution of the asphalt mixture constituents resulting in poor mechanical performance.
