SHIP MANEUVERING AND CONTROL IN WIND

The paper begins by examining the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces and moments acting on a ship in wind. From these a mathematical model suitable for detailed simulation is devised. This is simplified for study of the effect of major parameters on course-keeping, drifting and turning of various ship types at slow speed in wind and tide. Solutions of course-keeping behavior are presented in the form of "control boundaries." Three distinct modes of behavior are identified. Possible ways of measuring the course-keeping behavior by ship trials are described. The drift of a ship "stopped" in a wind is examined. The shear of a ship across the wind when turning is investigated and the sheer speed and limiting wind speed for turning estimated. The paper ends with some recommendations for design for satisfactory handling in wind.
