Bridge Reliability Evaluation Method for Asset Management
There is a growing concern within the bridge community regarding the increase of truck sizes and weights on our highway system. Further quantitative information is desired to understand the overload potential of existing structures. As a result, a reliability-based field evaluation method is proposed for bridge asset management. This paper conveys the overarching concept, general approach, benefits and limitations. In addition, a proof of concept pilot study is presented. The pilot study illustrates the methodology and potential benefits. In the study a bridge was evaluated that has poor load ratings; however, the calculated probability of failure due to overload is relatively low (below current standards) indicating rehabilitation or replacement is not urgent. Overall, the proposed method aims to assist bridge owners with resource allocation so that the structures most vulnerable to overload are addressed first.
