Eco-Approach and Departure along Signalized Corridors

With the emerging connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies, numerous Eco-Approach and Departure (EAD) strategies have been developed all over the world and considered to be a promising solution to the relief of transportation activity related pressure on energy and environment. Unlike most of existing EAD strategies that were applicable to only isolated intersection scenarios or to signalized corridor scenarios but in an intersection-by-intersection manner, the authors propose an innovative framework for EAD along signalized corridors (EADSC). Case study indicates that the proposed EADSC system shows great promise in fuel savings without compromising in mobility, when compared to the baseline driving strategy without SPaT knowledge and other existing EAD strategies. The authors also discuss some practical issues when no complete knowledge on the background signal timing plan is available in SPaT messages.
