Dual-Laser Based Measurement System for Lateral Distributions of Truck Wheels
In the process of pavement design and analysis, the lateral distributions of truck wheels are important parameters to consider. To obtain these parameters, visual-based observation of trucks passing is widely used; however, it is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and low in accuracy. This paper puts forward the dual-laser based measurement system. It can be utilized to measure speed, traffic volume, and most importantly, lateral placements of truck wheels. This system is automatic, unmanned, non-intrusive, and applicable even at night. Validation tests were conducted at 6 different locations with the dual-laser based system and visual-based method applied at the same time. A total of 544 trucks were measured and readings were compared individually. 93.38% of lateral placements of both readings were identical in the results. Errors were mostly from the misreading of visual-based records. Speeds calculated by dual-laser system achieved an accuracy rate of 95.6%.
