Using Mixed Methods to Examine User Preferences for Mobility as a Service Subscription Plans

Even though the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) concept is gaining traction, there is still much to learn about the intricate aspects of this concept. The objective of this paper is to examine user preferences for MaaS subscription plans, specifically looking at the modes and features individuals prefer. To do so, an explanatory sequential mixed methods research design is used, which combines quantitative modelling with in-depth qualitative analysis. In the first, quantitative, phase of the study, an online survey, including a stated preference experiment about MaaS plans is carried out. The data is analyzed using a mixed logit model (MMNL) to explore individuals’ preferences towards the various elements of MaaS plans. The second, qualitative, phase is based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with survey participants and the data is examined through thematic analysis. The results of the study provide interesting insights to consumer behavior and can be valuable to the private and public sector as well as the research community.
