Estimating the Benefits of the Internet of Things for Supply Chain Performance and Management – A Conceptual Framework
The Internet of Things (IoT) enhance the capabilities of supply chain management (SCM) by automating processes and surpassing human interaction. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) use the IoT as a platform to transfer and process data in a comprehendible format for supply chain managers to make critical time- or cost-saving decisions. However, currently there is not a clear framework for estimating the benefits of IoT on supply chain performance and its management. This research fills this gap by providing a conceptual framework for estimating the benefits of the IoT and related ICTs for supply chain performance. The elements of this framework are in the form of questions, propositions, metrics, and ICTs relations. The research synthesizes existing literature on SCM, its measurement, and the IoT. The literature review focuses on identifying and classifying metrics and ICTs that help improve supply chain information capture, collaboration, inventory control, asset utilization, and decision making under the IoT concept. This paper contributes to the existing body of literature by proposing a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) and ICTs that can help estimate IoT impacts on supply chain performance. The paper presents this set of KPIs and ICTs in the form of a matrix that matches specific metrics to specific ICTs that can assist in the measurement and estimation of the benefits of IoT on supply chain performance. Keywords: Supply Chain Management (SCM), Supply Chain Performance, Internet of Things (IoT), Metrics, Key Performance Indicators (KPI), Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
