Case Study Analyses of Innovative Modification of Geo-Engineering Properties of Sub-Standard Materials for Road Construction
In any field of material science and engineering applications, the stability of a material is of primary importance. This paper introduces, through case study analysis of several projects that have been successfully implemented in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania and Kenya, the innovatively developed TACH-MD Value Engineering (VE) technologies that modify and stabilize the geotechnical engineering properties of problematic in-situ subgrade soils and sub-standard geomaterials for use in pavement and foundation construction. The degree of enhanced performance is discussed on the basis of analysis of the modified/stabilized geo-engineering properties of the geomaterials. The versatility and effectiveness of these technologies is demonstrated for varying extreme environmental conditions including swampy flood plains, drought riddled areas, zones affected with torrential rainfall and simultaneously predominated with problematic soils. Case examples are also presented on how the technologies provided pragmatic engineering solutions to the extreme lack of suitable road construction materials in South Sudan through the use of more than 70% of the modified locally available problematic geomaterials culminating in substantial cost savings of 30 ~ 60% and construction time savings of more than 60%, whilst maintaining or enhancing the structural capacity. Further, the structural and value engineering benefits are demonstrated for each case scenario.
