CHILDREN'S KNOWLEDGE OF TRAFFIC TERMINOLOGY AND VERBAL TRAFFIC INSTRUCTION

BEGRIP VOOR VERKEERSTERMEN EN VERBALE VERKEERSINSTRUCTIE BIJ KINDEREN

If verbal traffic education is to be effective, children must know the traffic terms in the first place, but also comprehend and execute the instruction as a whole. Many studies are undertaken on children's knowledge of traffic terms, but the way in which this knowledge was measured varies. Therefore the results are difficult to compare. Some conclusions on single terms could be drawn. Children of 5 years old know a very limited number of traffic terms. When giving instruction to 5 year old children it is better to explain the traffic terminology used first, if possible visually. Besides real traffic terms some common ideas which are relevant for traffic are studied, e.g. colour, right and left handed. The use of short rhymes is not recommended. An extensive literature review on these subjects is also presented.
