The authors investigate the local policies, infrastructures and urban management solutions that have made these successful initiatives possible. The metropolitan regions are, in China: Beijing, Changsha, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Wuhan, and Zhengzhou; in Japan: Kyoto and Tokyo; in Europe: Amsterdam, Bergen, London, Oslo, Paris, Stockholm; in the United States: Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle.
