NOISE BARRIERS CLOSE TO BUILDINGS
TRAFIKBULLERSKAERMAR NAERA BEBYGGELSE
The study presents a series of measurements of the influence of traffic noise barriers placed close to residential areas. The aim is to investigate how well the new scandinavian calculation model (National Swedish Environment Protection Board RR 1979:1) directly describes the damping. Factors not treated in the calculation model, e.g. multiple reflections between barrier and house, obliquely incident and reflected sound, are also discussed here. At measurement the sound level was synchronously registered at a reference point and at every point of measuring. The reference point was normally placed 0.8 M above the barrier top whereas the points of measuring (normally 3) were between barrier and house, 1.2 M above ground. Normal traffic was used as sound sources. For the case of primary interest (I.E. garage or boarding close and parallel to house and unscreened reference point) the measured difference in equivalence level between the reference point and a point between barrier and house is on average 8-9 db(a). This is decidedly lower (approx 5 db(a)) than the result of the calculation model and is probably due to shorter distance between barrier and point of measuring and the influence of obliquely incident sound. Standing waves between parallel barriers and houses seem to be of minor importance. For cases directly covered by the calculation model, excellent correspondence between measured and calculated values was obtained. (TRRL)
