THE CHILD SUPPORT SEAT. A NEW TYPE OF PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR THE OLDER CHILD PASSENGER REPORT OF A CONCRETE SOCIETY WORKING PARTY

BILBAELTESKUDDEN. EN NY TYP AV SKYDDSSYSTEM I BILAR FOER BARN SOM VUXIT UR DEN BAKAATVAENDA BILBARNSTOLEN

The age group most often neglected when considering the problems of child protection in cars is that of the 4-12-year-old child. A new type of protection system has recently been made available on the market, especially designed to meet the protection and comfort needs of children in this age group. The system consists of a specially designed cushion which elevates the child so that he can see out through the window. The allocated seats gave the children increased safety, the belts fitted better over the shoulders of the child and the holders in the support seat stopped the belt from going into the stomach of the child in a simulated crash. Both cushion and child are held in place by the adult belt. Approximately 50 such seats have been allocated to families with children of three, six and eight years of age. The parents completed a questionnaire and were interviewed following 3 months' and one year's use of the seats, concerning their safety, comfort and handling qualities. These results are discussed as well as suggestions to manufacturers concerning the improvement of the system. (TRRL)
