ANNA STATUE INTERSECTION - RELATIVE MERITS OF FIXED TIME SETTING AND MANUAL CONTROL BY REGULATOR KNOB FOR PEAK LOW OPERATION

This study was carried out at a staggered four-way intersection on arterial road national highway 45 in madras city on 8-9 August 1979. Peak low traffic flow counts were made for three-phase fixed time signal settings on 8 August and similar periods for manual control on 9 August. These flows are tabulated and analysed. The increase in traffic flow over a 3 hour period on 9 August was between 4 and 8 per cent due to manual control which increased cycle time from 95 to 103 secs., and decreased the number of cycles per hour from 38 to 35. The deficiencies of the fixed time control as operated on 8 August are summarised. Recommendations are presented for the redesign of the cycle and phase timing, and also include junction layout modifications and parking restrictions. (TRRL)
