Temporary Works for Major Infrastructure Projects: Need for a Risk Analysis Based Approach
Major infrastructure projects in major cities all over the world involve some form of underground construction—rail infrastructure, cable tunnels, sewer tunnels, etc., among others. Codes of practice are well established for the design of such permanent structures, compared to the temporary structures installed for the earth retaining systems. This is addressed mostly by local guidelines and practices, as the solutions for temporary works are more driven by the available technology and resources. Also, the general tendency for the developer/owner is to encourage contractors bidding for the project, to design the temporary works to achieve a cost effective solution.
