PANYNJ Sustainable Design Guidelines and Envision

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) conceives, builds, operates and maintains infrastructure critical to the New York/New Jersey region’s trade and transportation network. As part of this role and pursuant to the agency’s sustainability policy, the PANYNJ develops and implements sustainable building guidelines (SBG) and sustainable infrastructure guidelines (SIG). The Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) manages the development and implementation of the Envision sustainable rating system. At the beginning of 2014, the Sustainable Design Group within the Authority’s Engineering Department, embarked on an exploration of the Envision rating system, comparing it to PANYNJ’s sustainable design guidelines. Because Envision’s criteria align closely with the SIG, the PANYNJ decided to conduct an Envision pilot study focused on one of the agency’s signature infrastructure projects—the Bayonne Bridge navigational clearance project.
