ANALYSIS OF THE STATE OF DEVELOPMENT OF PASSIVE ACCIDENT PROTECTION FOR MOTORCYCLISTS

ANALYSE DES ENTWICKLUNGSSTANDES DES PASSIVEN UNFALLSCHUTZES FUER MOTORISIERTE ZWEIRADFAHRER

Following a description of the particularly high risk involved in the use of motorcycles, the authors analyse the state of development of passive accident protection for motorcyclists; this is based on a description of accidents and consequent injuries. Requirements of the protective devices are derived from the analysis. The illustration of the developments in commercially available or proposed protection devices shows that: (1) there are considerable deficiencies in available safety devices such as clothing, protective stirrups etc, and (2) protective clothing and helmets have to be improved according to certain conditions. Because there is insufficient knowledge of accident mechanisms it is proposed that detailed analyses and experimental studies be undertaken with a view to the further development of protective equipment.
