ACCIDENTS AT NIGHT. PART 1 - STATE OF KNOWLEDGE BASED ON SPECIAL STATISTICAL STUDIES. PART 2 - ANALYSIS OF NIGHT ACCIDENTS ON THE BASIS OF OFFICIAL ROAD ACCIDENT DATA
NACHTUNFAELLE. TEIL I; WISSENSSTAND AUUF DER GRUNDLAGE SPEZIELLER STATISTISCHER UNTERSUCHUNGEN. TEIL II: ANALYSE ZU NACHTUNFAELLEN AUF DER GRUNDLAGE DER DATEN DER AMTLICHEN STRASSENVERKEHRSUNFALLSTATISTIK
Studies are reported which deal with the effect of various conditions on night-time accidents (alcohol, weather, differences in traffic volume, structural features of the road, special problems of orientation, efficiency of rescue services, belt use). This is followed by a report of studies dealing with the effectiveness of measures to reduce night-time accidents (alcohol campaigns, surveillance and legal controls, lighting and visibility of the road, illuminated pedestrian crossings, illumination and visibility of the road user, improvement of optical guidance by road markings, glare screens, animal fences, introduction of summer time, improvements in the rescue services). In the second part of the report the significance of night accidents as a proportion of all accidents is shown, over A period of time. The characteristics of accidents involving personal injury are discussed (type of traffic participation, age and sex of pedestrians and drivers, site of accident, time, state of the road, type and cause of accident). Selected problem areas are considered multi-dimensionally (alcohol, bad weather, young riders of motorcycles, car drivers, pedestrians). (TRRL)
