GRASSED AND PLANTED AREAS BY MOTORWAYS

The report describes the extent and characteristics of grassed and planted areas associated with motorways in the United Kingdom. Such areas are defined as the area between the hard shoulder and boundary fence. Chapters discuss the effect of geology and land use on types of plant life; the planting and maintenance of vegetation; reasons for the management of grassed area; the provision of ditches, drains, hedges and fences; the establishment and maintenance of central reservations; the effect of air pollution on motorway vegetation; and, details of costs of grassed areas managed.
