FIRE-FIGHTING MEDIA ASSOCIATED WITH OFFSHORE INSTALLATIONS
This chapter reviews the various fire-fighting materials available, and makes a general assessment of their properties and importance in relation to offshore risks. It also deals with fire-fighting media application techniques as used on offshore installations. Reference is made to the increasing dependence on automatic extinguishing systems, and the main types of system are described. These include water sprinkler and water deluge systems, foam sprinkler and foam monitor systems and halon total flooding systems. The growing use of Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) in water sprinkler systems is referred to. Portable fire extinguishers, hose reel equipment and larger wheeled or skid-mounted extinguishing units are also described. The final section discusses future development possibilities, starting with the fire protection requirements of a hypothetical unmanned platform, and then considering how these could be used to give a useful degree of automatic protection on existing platforms.
