DEVELOPMENTS IN FIRE DETECTION SYSTEMS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS TO OFFSHORE INSTALLATIONS

After explaining some of the limitations imposed by the necessity for equipment to be flameproof or intrinsically safe, a broad outline is given of the principle, function and design of various types of fire detector. Particular emphasis is placed on any new developments or improvements in design techniques and where possible an indication is given of future trends. There follows a section on system design philosophy in which an attempt is made to outline the main objectives of fire detection systems and to show how these objectives may be influenced by the offshore environment. Consideration is also given to the sensitivity and stability requirements of detectors linked directly to an automatic extinguishing system. The chapter is concluded by a section on siting in which specific guidance is given on the types of detector used in particular platform areas.
