ON LINE SHIP PRODUCTION CONTROL SYSTEMS
The application of on-line computing techniques to problems of production control in shipyards is considered in the light of experience which has been gained in two areas. The first is the problem which management has in forecasting the utilization of resources and the resulting financial implications of alternative orderbook scenarios in new building. The use of data available at the tendering stage and its interpretation with standard library data as input to an on-line computer is described. Methods of interrogation to investigate the effects of cost increases, productivity changes and labor availability are set out. The second is the use of methods by which the supply and installation of outfit material can be coordinated by means of an on-line information system. The system connects the activities of the technical, production engineering, purchasing, stores, scheduling, manufacturing and installation departments. Current developments concerned with applying similar techniques to the problems of control and billing in ship repair are also described.
