SITE EVALUATION OF A ZEBRA CROSSING SIMULATION MODEL

A simulation model of a zebra crossing, based on the assumption that road users obey highway code rules and that both pedestrian and vehicle inter arrival times could be represented by negative exponential distributions, is described, and computed delays compared with the results of a study of activities at three zebra crossing sites. An analysis of the data recorded shows that pedestrians arrive in groups and that the simulation program based on a negative exponential distribution overestimates vehicle delays. The use of actual pedestrian inter arrival times in delays. The use of actual pedestrian inter arrival times in the model produces vehicle delays much closer to observed values. A method of generating group pedestrian arrivals is suggested. A more sophisticated model, in which it is assumed that 50% of pedestrians cross immediately on arrival while the other 50% require a gap of at least 2 seconds in vehicle arrivals on the near side, gives results which show reasonable agreement with observed data.
