A Cross-Sectional Study of Emergency Department Visits by Children After All-Terrain Vehicle Crashes, Motor Vehicle Crashes, and Sports Activities

In this study, injury severity patterns of children injured in all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes, 2006-2011, are compared with those of motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) and sports injuries. Logistic regression models were used to analyze 6,004,953 U.S. emergency department (ED) visits due to incidents involving ATVs, MVCs, or sports activities. MVCs represented 44.7% of ED visits. Sports activities represented 51.9% of ED visits but were 90% less likely to result in severe injuries. ATV crashes represented just 3.4% of ED visits but were more likely to result in admission (8%) compared with MVCs (4%) and sports activities (1%), resulted in injuries similar in severity to MVCs (odds ratio, 1.03; P=0.626), and incurred higher median charges ($1263).
