GOLDEN RULES FOR NON-DESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION (NDE)
A summary of the Annual SANDT lecture is presented. The changes occurring in the role of NDE (non-destructive examination) techniques as a result of "fitness for purpose" with its fracture mechanics basis are outlined. The work of the Nuclear Energy Agency and the Marshall Committee for producing more stringent regulations is mentioned. Experimental work devised for detecting cracks at depth using ultrasonic testing on electroslag and sumberged arc butt welds and on an MMA welded nozzle in SA 302 Grade B plate, 200-250mm thick, is described. Results obtained are presented.
