APPLICATION OF THE (Q/S,E) METHOD TO THE SURVEILLANCE OF THE COMPACTION OF EMBANKMENTS ON THE MOTORWAY A 42 IN THE MIRIBEL-JONAGE AREA

APPLICATION DE LA METHODE (Q/S,E) AU CONTROLE DU COMPACTAGE DES TERRASSEMENTS DE L'AUTOROUTE A 42 DANS LA ZONE DE MIRIBEL-JONAGE

The recommendations for earthworks for roads (rtr) have now been in existence for nearly three years and have been used on numerous earthworks sites of varying sizes to control compaction. For certain works where the contract envisaged the use of classical surveillance procedures, the (q/s,e) method of the rtr was applied in parallel. Such was the case on the a42 motorway in the Miribel-Jonage area. The authors first outline the scope of the work and describe the earthworks contract. The (q/s,e) method is outlined and the site applied explained. A comparison is made between the results obtained with three types of surveillance: determination of the rate of compaction, determination of the bearing capacity and the (q/s,e) method. Conclusions, giving both the point of view of the client and of the contractor, show that they are in agreement regarding the usefulness of the (q/s,e) method. (TRRL)
