DESIGN CRITERIA FOR UNBOUND ROADBASES
ZUR FRAGE DER "BEMESSUNGSKRITERIEN" UNGEBUNDENER TRAGSCHICHTEN
The relation between deformation from external loading and the reaction forces activated by this permits the design of stable upper courses of a road structure. Since a precise mathematical representation of the processes is not possible, time and load dependent stiffness coefficients from an analytical study are used. A "stress-strain line for aggregates" is developed. The interactions between external and internal forces are considered together with deformation resistance and the maximum possible deformation of the loaded material. On the basis of the load data and dimensioning the material loading distortions and stresses can be calculated. A special study is made of the stiffness behaviour of non-bound roadbases, since with these no constants relating to each separate course can be assumed for the stiffness coefficients. A further section deals with the stress differentials between separate courses, in particular between bound and non-bound courses. The influence of the ability to accommodate tension is also investigated, considered as the tensile strength in the horizontal direction of a bound roadbase. Finally conclusions are drawn from the calculation models. (TRRL)
