CONTROL OF ANALYSIS BY SIEVING

KONTROLLE DER ANALYSENSIEBE

Sieve analyses contribute decisively to the assessment of the structure of bituminous materials for the purpose of soil analysis and for many other tasks in the field of road construction work. The author points out that test errors can occur, especially when using screens with mesh sizes larger or equal to 2 mm, as wire mesh may have manufacturing tolerances. This becomes important when segregating chippings/sand and sand/filler. Screen analyses were carried out with identical screens under reproducible conditions and compared with glass beads as the material. For smaller diameters they heap up however, and the screening results are affected. Phosphor bronze powder has been found useful for control tests of mesh size up to 0.063 mm. Mention is made of test methods including quantitative photo interpretation and measuring the mesh size with the aid of a microscope or a projector. Further comparisons of test screenings are related to the variation of screening time and the amplitude, always with the same material. Reference is made to the manufacture of coordinated screens for analysis, which are widely made in nominal widths and which are checked for material passing and not passing. The relevant test data are contained in a test certificate for the client. (TRRL)
