SPECIAL FEATURES AND PROBLEMS OF THE OTTO ENGINE WITH EXHAUST FUMES TURBO-CHARGING

BESONDERHEITEN UND PROBLEME DES OTTOMOTERS MIT ABGASTURBOAUFLADUNG

The greater introduction of charging in the otto engine could depend on the solution of certain problems which are discussed. The effects of the compression ratio, charge air temperature, air fuel ratio and ignition point on combustion and resistance of the mixture to automatic ignition, and on economics and efficiency, are discussed. The volumetric current identification graph of the charged otto engine is derived and compared with that of the charged diesel engine, and from this the requirements of the compressor are worked out. The arrangement of the butterfly valve to control the engine is discussed, and its effect on the pick-up of the charged otto engine and on the avoidance of compressor pumps is illustrated. Problems of controlling the charging pressure by controlling the turbine output are dealt with. The disadvantages of a blow-off control in the charged otto engine are discussed and suggestions made as to how an ideal control of the charging pressure in the charged otto engine should be effected.
