RAILWAY MACRO-SYSTEMS

The article deals with railway macro-systems (RMSs), which are defined as "groups of physically interconnected railways which exchange traffic". This idea dates back a long way, but has never been systematically analysed until now. The author describes the two essential component elements of the notion, i.e. standardisation in the broadest sense of the word and also the existence of a structure providing a basis for at best decision-making or at least coordination. He then gives an account of the numerous variations on the theme which have proved their worth. Without going into the main existing RMSs individually, the author concludes with a number of thoughts on current railway developments. 2.39/6
