JAPAN: SUN STILL RISING
The article examines Japan's position as the world's maritime super-power from its post-war economic development to the present and future challenges facing Japan in light of the world energy crisis. Recognising the significant implications Japan's dependence on imported oil can have on the shipping industry, the country's leaders have drawn up a long-term energy strategy involving conservation and substitution of alternative fuels. The article discusses increasing imports of LNG, coal and iron ore, the latter two of critical importance to Japan's steel industry. The last section of the article, through the use of graphs and tables, analyzes Japanese shipping demand, fleet size, and a new shipbuilding program designed to maintain and support the industry at planned, reduced levels.
